Harold mixes long melee sequences with leaps, projectiles, and arena-wide pressure. The safe strategy is to move first and attack second: identify whether the current sequence owns close range or a projectile lane, leave that space, then use a short punish only after the final swing or landing.
Harold is the Act 3 boss and the final boss of the current campaign. Defeating him awards Dragonslayer.
Quick Harold strategy
- Enter Act 3 with a build that can damage both a boss and nearby reinforcements.
- Keep Harold and the center of the arena visible.
- Move sideways out of aimed or spreading projectile lanes.
- Dodge the jump slam and other obvious guard-breaking attacks.
- Let multi-swing melee sequences finish before returning.
- Use one compact combo, Ally Command, or Special during recovery.
- In the faster second half, give up marginal damage to preserve health and space.
Read the attack category
You do not need to memorize every animation. First decide which of three problems is coming:
| Attack category | What to watch | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Leap or slam | Harold leaves the ground or commits his body forward | Exit the landing area; punish only after impact |
| Projectile pattern | Aimed shots, spreading shots, walls, or falling effects | Move across the lane toward visible open floor |
| Melee sequence | Repeated slashes, running stab, spin, or fire breath at close range | Create distance until the full sequence ends |
Holding Block through the largest leap and projectile attacks is unreliable. A timed Parry can work against attacks that break an ordinary guard, but Dodge and positioning are the safer first-clear plan.
Phase one: learn the end of each sequence
Use the opening phase to identify the last animation in Harold’s common melee strings. Stay outside the arc, let the sequence finish, and test a single short punish. If Harold turns before your recovery ends, make the next punish shorter.
Do not force damage during fire breath or projectile pressure. These attacks are useful repositioning time: move toward the center, clean up the nearest soldier if safe, and prepare for the next approach.
Phase two: shorten every commitment
Around the second half of the fight, the gap between Harold’s actions becomes less comfortable. The correct adjustment is not to attack faster; it is to commit to fewer actions per opening.
- Replace a full combo with its safest portion.
- Use Special only after a landing or completed sequence.
- Do not chase Harold through a dangerous lane.
- Keep one Dodge for the follow-up rather than spending it to close distance.
- Move the camera before moving the hero when the arena becomes crowded.
Handle falling Dragonstone and energy rays
At higher Threat, falling Dragonstone and Mother Stone energy can add hazards to the arena. Treat the floor and projectile lanes as part of the boss moveset. If a safe damage opening overlaps an active hazard, it is no longer a safe opening.
Move toward the largest visible area, not automatically away from Harold. Backing into the edge reduces the space available for the next projectile spread and makes reinforcements harder to see.
Reinforcements and camera control
Harold’s arena can contain a large number of soldiers. Clear a pocket around the hero and protect the camera angle, but keep the boss on-screen. Ranged soldiers or shielded enemies that close your escape lane are higher priority than isolated enemies at the far edge.
Use wide-area commands during a boss recovery so the same action damages Harold and opens the arena. Spending every command on distant soldiers leaves no safe way to capitalize on a stagger.
Build and hero advice
The final fight rewards a complete interaction more than a collection of unrelated bonuses. Bring:
- one quick way to apply the build’s condition;
- one payoff that fits a short opening;
- one crowd or survivability tool;
- an answer to shielded enemies;
- enough healing or damage reduction to recover from one mistake.
Wallace: lean on a consistent defense and avoid long strings after a single slash.
Brienne: maintain pressure only while the arena remains readable; use movement to reset projectile lanes.
Ruadh: he is available after Iseult and can be used for the first Harold attempt. His value is highest when his kit and permanent upgrades have been practiced before the final Act.
Use the systems overview to distinguish permanent preparation from Emblems and other run-only power.
Co-op strategy
Keep the party in a loose arc rather than a tight stack. The targeted player moves Harold away from revives and safe floor; the others clear the closest reinforcements and punish only after his attention is committed.
Call projectile direction and falling hazards. If Harold changes targets, cancel greedy finishers and reset. Preserve one team resource for a downed player or late-phase opening instead of firing every Special at the start.
Harold appears invincible
Paper Cult has patched a problem that could leave Harold invincible. If his health does not move during an obvious open window:
- stop spending limited commands or Specials;
- let the current phase transition or animation complete;
- confirm the game is updated;
- restart the fight if the state never clears;
- verify the installed files before the next attempt.
In co-op, also check whether every player is still synchronized. If only one client sees the problem, follow the co-op troubleshooting steps.
Common mistakes
- Holding Block against a jump slam or spreading projectiles.
- Dodging forward without seeing the projectile lane behind Harold.
- Starting a long finisher after the first melee swing.
- Letting reinforcements push the camera against the arena edge.
- Ignoring floor hazards because Harold is staggered.
- Spending every team resource before the faster second half.
Frequently asked questions
Is Harold the final boss?
Yes. Harold is the Act 3 boss and ends the current three-Act campaign.
Does Harold have a second phase?
His pace becomes more demanding in the latter half of the fight. Shorten punish windows and preserve movement resources.
What achievement does Harold award?
Defeating Harold awards Dragonslayer.
Why is Harold taking no damage?
Let any phase transition finish first. If the health bar remains unchanged during clear openings, update or restart the game and verify the installed files.
